The Châteauesque Queen Anne-style mansion was designed by Arthur Crooks. The Colonel had tried operating a tobacco plantation on the land, but being far from the coast, it was hard to compete with the plantations closer to port cities. When she died in 1929, John immediately set about making the transition.
It does not show up on a grounds map from 1877, and on an 1843 map the space was occupied by a cottage. By 1750, he owned more than 800 acres of land in Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties, moving his interests as a plantation owner, planter, and merchant toward the developing commercial center of the estate. The name “Hampton” did not originate with the Ridgely’s. It is now used as a garden tool shed by the Glen Arm Garden Club, the organization that maintains the garden in front of the shed. If driving, take a right out of the main entrance and proceed a tenth of a mile down the road to the Lower Farm. In his Will, he requested that a family burial ground be established at his dwelling place and that he be buried there.

Hampton is also the story of its people, as the estate evolved through the actions of the Ridgely family, enslaved African Americans, European indentured servants, and paid laborers within a nation struggling to define its own concept of freedom.
