On May 11, 1844, Morse sent the first inter-city message. In a telegraph line, a relay takes a signal arriving from one circuit and re-transmits it to another circuit; in this way a long telegraph line can be made up of much shorter, individually powered lines, each linked by a relay. The International Morse Code, developed from the original code of Morse and Vail. In 1830, in Albany, New York, Joseph Henry discovered that utilizing high voltages allowed him to transmit electrical current over larger distances than previously possible. The dips in the line had to be de-coded into letters and numbers using a dictionary composed by Morse.

He returned to America in 1815 and became a highly successful artist, painting prominent citizens such as the former US President & Founding Father John Adams. Between 1832 and 1837, he developed a working model of an electric telegraph, using crude materials such as a home-made battery and old clock-work gears. His image captured the psychology of the Federalists; Calvinists from England brought to North America ideas of religion and government, thus linking the two countries. The telegraph Joseph Henry demonstrated at Albany could not work over the long distances required for a fully practical telegraph, but Henry overcame this problem. Morse died of pneumonia in New York on April 2, 1872.

He also ran for office, but was defeated in both of his campaigns to become New York mayor. This coding system was significantly better, as it did not require printing or decoding but could be "sound read" by operators. However, his claim to have invented the telegraph was often ignored, so he did not receive the royalties he ought to have.
