To find out, we sat down with Michael Delis, Executive Vice-President and Director of Training at the Project Management Centre.
There’s an amazing report published every year called The Annual State of Agile and the latest one identifies around 12-13 major benefits. More traditional approaches like Waterfall rely upon the entire project being completely planned and scoped before the work can begin. This approach reportedly set the premise for Agile working. Agile is more than a corporate project management tool: it’s a life skill.

Actual methodologies include Scrum, Kanban and Extreme Programming. Nothing. Copyright 2020 Australian Institute of Project Management. Sign up today, it's free.

Let’s be honest - this is rarely the case! That’s what we call a predictive environment, and that’s where the traditional Waterfall approach thrives. (D)evelopment. Traditional management structures have a few leaders who say, “you’re going to do this, and you’re going to do that.” In agile environments, it’s the team that makes decisions. This means that agile projects are built slowly and piece by piece. These include hardware development, manufacturing, logistics, organisational change and marketing. Agile’s origins are really rooted in the software industry. That was the first industry that started moving so quickly that an agile approach was necessary, and that was the first industry to really benefit from it.

Waterfall and Agile are project management methodologies. The fact that Scrum is based on iterations and divides the work into smaller portions has made it a favorite of IT and other sectors. Take the take the time to consider your project goals and determine the variables, dependencies and activities that are crucial for your project and importantly your organisation or team’s culture and preferred ways of working. However, many of a traditional project manager’s responsibilities are distributed in this methodology. That is relatively new because experts are continuing to add to the subject matter. More structured methodologies also work well when the project’s stakeholders or customers don’t need to be involved throughout the project.

It gives greater control to customers/clients. Basically, project management in Agile focuses on finishing the project one task at a time. Modern customers need desired products – and they need them fast. Next, teams use velocity, burndown, and burnup charts to measure the progress of their work.
